History

The history of the flip flop sandal is of course a tricky question: something so simple to protect the soles of the feet, where did it begin? The very idea of a platform strapped to the foot with thongs of various fashions across the foot or through the toes is the very origin of footwear known to man.

The Flip Flop and certainly the Havaiana Flip Flop was inspired by the Zori, a centuries old Japanese sandal. Brought about for indoor wear, the Japanese have a custom of removing the shoes and putting on the Zori sandals before going in to the house indicating respect and humility. The first Brazilian Havaianas were created on the 14th of June 1962 and had the defining advantage above others that it was made of a natural - 100% local rubber which guaranteed that the sandals were long-wearing, comfortable and didn’t smell.

Here at Flip Flop Flo we stock Havaianas for the quality of their flip flops which does not lose its shape and the straps don’t break. They also have probably the largest and certainly the most stylish range of flip flops for women, men and children. They constantly come out with ranges supporting the rainforest and national football teams for example.

Being both pretty and a pleasure to wear the flip flop is a cult object. The person who does not have at least one pair - no matter what colour - is just not with it, flip flops are a must for every wardrobe and suitcase. Havaiana sandals particularly, are an object of desire, have glamour, personality and style. They are basic, irresistible, indispensable and eternal.

‘Havaianas’ translates from Portuguese to English meaning ‘Hawaiians’. Since their launch, 2.2 billion pairs of Havaianas sandals have been produced and sold throughout the world. If the sandals were laid end to end, they would go around the world 50 times.
